Halfway across Halsema, I learned what I have been looking for — Marky’s middle name. I was told it’s ‘Cadaweng.’ I’m not sure if it’s true but it basically confirms that Marc Anthony Angelo is an Igorot. Her mom is one. He grew up in Butuan but is now in Baguio. I think he is of Bauko descent.
I tried asking Marky himself via StarStruck TXT, but he never replied. Anyway, that facility is not that reliable for queries such as these and comments posted on the StarStruck blog were more helpful.
I’m back in Baguio with a Sagada windburn. And talking about home, someone with a family name of Cadaweng used to live one house away from us. I’m sure it’s not Marky’s family, but you get the idea of how close the connection can get once one tries to do some legwork around here.
So far, Marky’s still there and it seems he will continue to be there at least for a month more. Because of that, I wouldn’t mind the windburn. And I’m a southpaw, too, as if anybody cares. LOL
My next question would be: Where did he last enroll at? We’re not schoolmates because the last someone made it to the regionals of the other artista reality show, they made the whole school know by posting the info on the university bulletin board and leaflet.

Marky is a 17-year old Architecture student of SLU, Baguio. Most likely he is on leave of absense now so he could be in Manila to try out his luck at StarStruck.
Hello po sa inyong lahat! Sa lahat po ng may alam tungkol kay Marky, pwedeng magtanong? Kailan po xa ipinanganak? Gagawa po kc ako ng article about him para sa school organ namin…pls reply f u know when, thanks!
Hi to all!
I am so touched reading all your comments about Marky and the whole of Igorotlandia. For the sake of people who wanders what it is to be an Igorot, I designed this comment for you. Igorots in its etymology was derived from the vernacular “i-gulod” with i that refers to place. It was recalled that decades before, the Americans were asking people from “i-gulod” as to who they are. To diferrentiate it with those of the lowlands, they answered they are “i-gulod” a vernacular term of people from the mountains which was pronounced by Americans as Igorots due to their twang English. Since then, the “i-gulod” were called Igorots.
As to how and why the Igorots are unique referring to their Heritage, it gives credit to their being uncolonized. History points out that the Igorots were not colonized by Spaniards. They were very vigilant and was able to preserve the “gulod” making them uncolonized. Since there was no colonization, the Igorots were able to preserve their culture and go on with their practices and traditions. Years passed by, the Igorots welcomed foreign missionaries. That is how the Igorots were discovered. The missionaries documented the uniqueness of the Igorots. they developed the talents and skills of the natives. They put up schools and clinics as well as Livelihood centers such as those of Sagada weaving as well as Sabangan weaving. If you notice, the Igorots have a very good command of the English language. Even old folks who are no read no write can converse with you in English. Well it speaks, Igorotlandia was the center of missionary activities before. With the influx of foreign tourists and missionaries that visit the Cordillera every year especially Banawe and Sagada, the Heritage of the Igorots were many times published in books and magazines. Writers from all over the globe go to Banawe and sagada and document the lifestyle of the Igorots and that is how Masferre became popular. With the passage of time, the Igorots were able to be influenced by American culture. That is how the phrase ” id Besao ah katikateg ad Us, nan breakfast mi ah, eggs” came as a joke. It means to say ” In Besao, it looks like US, our breakfast is eggs.” The Igorot people were able to make live some foreign cultures and the most of which was the knowledge of the English language. It is normal for Igorots to converse in the English language. As to the architecture also, try visiting Sagada and you would be mezmerize, it looks like a country setting in US. The houses there are foreign inspired and people are friendly and they seem to be good conversationalists.
You may have noticed, Igorots are not fond of our local entertainment . May it be in music and showbiz. They prefer country and foreign alternative music and reggae too. With movies, they prefer English movies over Tagalog. Why? The igorots since time immemorial was discriminated by non Igorots. They were mistreated and a lot of misconceptions and booboos were very evident. The Igorots didn’t have a good rapport to other Filipino tribes. They were always addressed as “ay Igorot” and it was said with contempt preempting the Igorots to make an impression and reach out that Igorots are no diferrent to the rest of Filipinos. Try to interact with the Igorots and you will know their mind setting why they are not fanatic. They seem cool towards famous local actors and actresses.
I read ur comment bigfoot and virolabel and loida. i like ur attitude of facing these challenges against us, torogis. Anyways i also experienced this, eversince i came to the city for college and it made me stronger facing this “kaignorantehan” of others towards us.
In exchange, i idolize more foreign celebrities than local ones. Foreigners appreciate highlanders than other races in the country could. They say our culture is unique and one to be proud off. (sorry ha paulit- ulit na, sorry i carried away! aren’t we? hehe)
Basta Marky, what ever happens, always keep your feet in the ground… just turn around, i’ll be TWO STEPS BEHIND, gemays!…. good luck
on pala hehe,

hi! Some people had a wrong impression when they saw marky aan igorot.Igorots are talented, educated and God fearing people. They have close family ties and a sense of respect to there elders.thats makes Marky a winning dude.Compared to all his companions.i guess Marky has the best family foundation, with love from the family and prayers from everybody.

Adi takun bubukudan di GAWIS!!! Mayat ay aldaw taku amin!!! Ibutos taku si Marky Cielo!!! Torogi Rules!!!!!
Hello!
Thanks Iyx for the response. We all are carried away. For a long time, we’ve been tolerating those misconceptions and booboos towards us that’s why we seem to have this outpour of emotions to defend our great heritage.
Let me tell you some of those discriminatory experiences one of which was those of 2 people from Bauko Mt. Province who was denied of their Insurance benefit just because they are Igorots, another is the then T.V. sitcom Lucy loves Richard where, in one of its episode lambasted the Igorots. It’s kinda insulting since it is scripted but we have to give couples Lucy and Richard an excuse because they don’t have knowledge about who we are. Atleast Lucy had the heart to make up for what she has said years before. She liked Marky and even bets him to be the sole survivor. Let’s appreciate her for that as what our ancestors had taught us, the value of restorative justice.
Over and above these are all those booboos and misconceptions about us. A friend of mine who went to UP Diliman for college was somehow engaged in a heated class discussion. Their instructor asked them to report about their respective provinces so my friend reported about Mt. Province. When she was delivering her report, one of her classmates interrupted chuckling “ay igorot”. My friend was piqued and since that is a verbal abuse she answered saying that indeed she is an Igorot but what it is that made her different from them. Their instructor, seeing the tension, interrupted and lectured the class that the purpose of the report was for learning and not to argue with. Another also is the experience of the grandfather of my friend who was rushed to one of the hospital in Manila. The hospital staffs were hesitant to admit him saying “wala yan wala yan, walang pera ang mga yan, Igorot yan ehâ€? when all of a sudden, a doctor came in and told the staffs that the patient is his grandfather. The staffs were hushed ashamed of what they had reacted. To humor it, they became more embarrassed when they came to know that one among the companion of the patient is a lawyer who happens to be his son and the other is an engineer in Saudi. It’s true, the Igorots are simple in their way of dressing. They are the simple t-shirt jean type people. They are somehow behind when it comes to fashion. It is understandable because of the moral orientation of the Igorots. They have a very high moral orientation. They are simply conservative, very typical Filipinos upholding the values of Maria Clara. But is it enough to level us down just because we are not that person with a fashion sense? We were not dressed up fashionable, is that enough basis to conclude that we don’t have money and that we are to be shooed away and not deserve a treatment from the hospital? Igorots are not materialistic. We may not have expensive, fashionable clothes but we have beautiful and comfortable houses to live with. We can afford expensive foods and the case of poverty to Igorots is very minimal.
Yes, all of us had a lot of stories to tell. All those misconceptions that Igorots are barbaric, uncivilized, monkey-looking with the buntot and dark complexions, stupid, ignorant were just normal for us to hear. We have so many circumstances in life that we were mistreated due to our being an Igorot. We’ve been so silent, unmindful of what they’re telling us. I myself just shrugged it off…well, we didn’t entertain it that much, it’s not our lost anyway…its their great lost because educated people who knows well the Igorots had come to like and appreciate the Igorots.
Truely, the Igorots are the minority. But we have won the hearts of foreign countries. Narda’s products had reached the World market. You go to US and Masferre’s books and products are sold. Our locally grown cherries and strawberries were made into wine and it is packaged for export. Our short strawberry cake landed the guiness book of world record. Our food delicacy called “pinikpikan” cooked with “kini-ing” or “etag” is enjoyed by almost everybody regardless of race. Our wood carvings or sculptures were also for export quality and we also grow vegetables that are sold to lowlanders. Try interrupting foreign tourist as to where in the Philippines they like the most. Our tourist attractions attracted lots of foreigners and I proudly say that the Igorots had contributed a lot to the booming of Philippine Tourism. Even our festivals, we have the Panagbenga and Lang-ay festival or wine festival and many more had attracted foreigners too.
It is very saddening that some writers from Manila don’t know even their geography. Sometimes they write Mt. Province Benguet. Truely, our local media seldom features the Igorotlandia while in fact our culture and the beauty of our nature were often featured on discovery channel and other foreign outfits. There are lots of interesting stories about the Igorots that are worth featuring. Invade the uplands and you will see the artistry of the Igorots. Almost all restaurants here in Baguio are decorated with lots of paintings featuring native artists. Visit also the bars here in Baguio and you will discover how good Igorots could sing too.
The time has come for the Igorots to redeem themselves. Thanks for Marky. He has paved the way for the liberation. Marky broke the silence of the Igorots. He had let the Igorots slip away from the bondage of discrimination that beset them since time immemorial. Torogi rocks! An Igorot boy really made a nationwide invasion. For those who mistaken Marky as plastic, you are wrong. His humility and goodness of heart is genuine. He has wisdom in his words and he has a cool aura. Well, he has these qualities of an Igorot.
To co- Filipinos, let’s be united. Don’t stray away the Igorots as you’ve been doing in the past. Be proud that somehow, the Philippines had an Indigenous tribe to be proud of. Discover us more and believe me, you will like us and appreciate us. We are in no way different to you except our unique heritage. We intend to preserve and live with it for we are not just proud about it but because it is our lifestyle and identity.
yes, virolabel, all that u’ve said is true……i had my cousin’s site showing the indigenous culture of the cordillera, and since she cannot pay her account online, one foreigner found her site and he was much willing to sponsor it… http://www.fotolog.net/ayeona now its …… That’s why we thank them much coz they are the ones really valuing our own culture and of us as a whole…
ok, so much has been said… what we just want from them is to look us at with a new eye……”Civilization begins when we are able to look at one another without fear”… we are the same…. Go Marky!!!!!!!

congratulations! iba talaga ang hatak mo, ang lakas ng dating mo, lakas ng sex appeal mo…pinoy na pinoy talaga ang buong katauhan mo… be humble and always ask for HIS guidance sa lahat ng gagawin mo sa iyong buhay… God bless you always!!!
congrats Marky! You made it. Itinaas mo ang bandera ng mga igorot na nilalait sa lowlands. My mother is from Bauko also. Kaya, apir tayo!!!!!!!!
Hello again!
Thanks for appreciating my article. Sometimes, you have to make the most of any oppurtunity to make a point. With proper education, we, the Igorots will be appreciated.
Thanks Iyx, that was a very nice site. Its a blessing to have met you and hope this is a start of a good friendship hehe. Try to log on also to http://www.basecampbaguio.com. Our beloved Cordillera promises a lot of nature tripping. Try visiting the site and discover the beauty of the outdoors featuring Cordillera. hahaha hope we could do some mountaineering and camping on top of the mountain.
My hometown also has a plateau(very ideal for a romantic scene, hope Marky gets a shoot in this place), very ideal for camping. We also have a dense forest like Barlig that promises a serene communication with nature. Wow! I could just hear those chirping birds, smell those grassy scent and cool myself with the water dripping from the trunk of the trees. Pwaaamise, much much to see. Many orchids too.
Back to Marky, I WAS THERE,MARKY! Thanks to your father, he gave me a ticket. hehehe I just wanted to witness in bold eyes the unfolding of a history…Marky, you are indeed a history maker, “the first sole survivor in the history of starstruck” and “the first Igorot who made it to stardom.” Alam mo bang classmate sana tayo sa ating veg. class? Hindi ka na tumuloy kasi nainterrupt ng pagsali mo sa starstruck hehehe(according to tita Bel) Anyway, txt mo naman ako, just want to know you up close and personal haha. Get my number sa daddy mo ha(shhh…hiya kasi me na gets sa father mo eh). Anyway, you’re sooo good! It wasn’t a close fight anyway. When I was watching, I wasn’t thrilled after all, because I and almost everybody knew that you will be the sole survivor. Even your co-survivors, they have blank faces, no signs of pain and tension on their faces…they know somehow that you are the SOLE!!! They seem relaxed, so with the audience…you really flaunted your craft enticing everybody that your being a sole is beyond contest…everybody expected that you are the winner…you left your co-survivors behind with no pangs of pain but rather an inspiration to make out the most of their craft…you really linked and inspired everybody and with that, Marky, I salute you for making a nationwide invasion.

hello evryone……
Congrats Marky…. U desserve IT!!!!
I was at Cotabato during the grand finals…..Me and the igorot troops watch it on t.v…..welll a lot of proffesional Igorots are destined here at Cotabato,Police officials,PMA,teachers, priest nurses doctors name it we have them here……due to their tight scheadules some dont know that an Igorot was able to enter the final $ of ss3.so when i come here feom gensan i told my aunt to watch Marky the igorot contestant and she was glad to know that a kailyan was able to make it….my cousin txt our kakailyan to eat dinner at my aunts place and a lot of them arrive… together we watch it.. as if parang reunion din….sabi pa nga nila sa comments pa nga lang daw ng jurrors ehhhh tipong panalo na si Marky…. then un nga nanalo xa…..sabi nila Marky is the first igorot who proudly claimed tha his an igorot on national television…. MAy i ask…. How a bout Neri Naig of star circle igorota ba xa?
sana patuloy pa rin nating suportahan si marky to make him stay in showbiz….. wish ko lang wsana magka movie xa agad….Marky stay as humble as u are…

congratulations to marky for being the sole survivor of ss3!!! i wasn’t able to watch him on tv but am sure most of my kailyans in ifugao did.
………….still revovering from the fever of marky`s victory……hey, marky, jolina`s comment and my suspicion long before the final four was right: that your name is already written in the stars…….like mark herras who is also mark angelo off screen. okay, as much as all the good and the best things has been said underthe sun about you, it suddenly clicked to me that YOU binded us, the igorots altogether…….YOU made us ONE……….and YOU gave us the biggest HOPE that no political leader had ever given……i remember the ss3`s musical background on the final week the song “YOU RAISE ME UP”- it was like a prophecy……para uppay kn cka nan dey……after your victory your igorotlandia was like singing YOU RAISE ME UP……our sons and daughters will follow after you…..that`s what you were asking for, you amazing son -of -an igoy…….keep your feet……(and your shoes) on the ground!

Hello Jen!
I’m somehow delighted to read a comment coming from one of the artists of tam awan village. You’re right, Marky is a good artist too, but I have’nt checked yet from kwaderno the works of Marky. Hehehe, I really have to check on that yet. Anyhow, its not a question because the dad of Marky was the one who illustrated the cover design of Salin Buhay 2003 so Marky might have gotten that talent too.
Hello again Marky! I’ve been obsessed visiting this site just to connect with you. I really don’t have enough time to watch T.V. so this is where I could be abreast of you especially that most of my work is computer based. I don’t know how its gonna work but if you could visit Baguio on the 22nd of April, please do come and together let’s celebrate Earth’s day. We have lots of activities to promote environmental awareness. Network groups such as the Cordillera Green Network, People’s Initiative for Learning and Development, Academic groups, Baguio Artists’ group and individuals with same cause will be spearheading the event. I would like also to call the attentions of youths here from the Cordillera to join us also with all of our activities. We will be having film showings, photo exhibits, forum on environment, book launching, poetry reading, speech competition, concert and music jam… April would be a very busy month for us with the Lang ay festival and the Earth’s Day. Hope to see you Marky sa Lang ay ha. And for those interested to join poetry reading and speech competition, visit the Cordillera Green Network office at Lopez Building, Session road. Let’s together assume our responsibility of stewardship to mother nature.
